Survey results will determine some of the use of technology in the classroom or the lack of technology in the class, or both.  Will this ultimately lead to increased student performance?  How can we measure that?

Design a survey and administer to administrators for their input.

Survey responses will give the administrators views on why technology is lacking in the teachers’ lessons.  Will this ultimately lead to increased student performance?  How can we measure that?

Meet with individual teachers and administrators to discuss my action research project and get clarification from the survey results.

Finished Project/Final Report

  1. Please give me input. I initially wanted to finish the project in December, but went ahead and did it through the end of the school year. I had a hard time figuring out how I would measure student achievement if technology was embedded in lessons. Thoughts?

  2. It is exciting to hear that you are going to be addressing the use of technology in your school. I like the idea of creating surveys. However, in addition to offering surveys to teachers and administrators, I think it would also be worthwhile to give surveys to students to address their understanding of technology and the ways they would like to see technology implemented in their school. This "needs assessment" will allow the teachers and administrators to design lessons that are engaging for the students.

In addition to offering surveys, do you have any plan of offering professional development for your teachers? If your teachers, themselves, are not comfortable with technology, they will not feel comfortable utilizing it in their classrooms. Perhaps your principal would be on board with offering some type of engaging technology training for your fourth and fifth grade teachers.

It would also be a good idea to find some examples of engaging lessons that utilize technology. You could share the lessons with the fourth and fifth grade teachers. This may inspire them to use them in their own classrooms.

Good luck with your action research plan!

  3. Hi Leroy,
I think adding technology is essential to student learning and preparing them to become lifetime learners. Is there a specific reason why you chose 4th and 5th grade students? I think using survey monkey is a great tool. Would each student have their own login and email accounts? I think it would be imperative to include the students in a survey. I think the data that you would collect would be valuable to your action research project. It could also help connect students more to the lesson and acceptance to change. It's all about getting them to buy in. Good luck and keep me posted!

  4. Leroy,

I am a career and technology teacher, so I am very pro technology for student engagement! I like that you are using survey monkey to get feedback. It's a great tool for you to use and for teachers to see in case they want to implement use of it in their programs. I would be curious to see how teachers are already using technology in their rooms, before working to increase use. I have taught in traditional schools as well as my technology center. I have seen teachers that were resistant to new technologies, but were forced to show they use them, implement them in ways that really didn't enhance learning. It makes me sad that people see this as a burden instead of as an awesome tool! Good luck!
